Malegarh’s martyrs recalled

Floral tributes were paid to the 26 brave souls of ‘Sepoy Mutiny’ at a function organized by  ‘Patkai Trekkers’  a NGO at Latu, situated  at a distance of about  15 km from Karimganj. These brave martyrs had laid down their lives fighting against the British forces in Malegarh, a hillock sited at a non descriptive village.

It is important to state that Latu or Malegarh was the historic place in the north-east region where ‘the first war of independence of 1857’ took place. While addressing the assemblage of district and BSF officials and civilians, Prof Janmajit Roy   described about the bravery and courage of these soldiers who fought valiantly and killed Major Bying, the commanding officer of the British force beside five other soldiers.
