Established in 1946, Karimganj College is one of the pioneering Colleges of Assam, imparting education in Science, Arts & Commerce. Situated on the bank of Kushiara river demarcating Indo- Bangladesh Border, the College is playing a significant role for last six decades in the field of Higher Education of the region. Today, it is one of the leading colleges under Assam University. The college has been reaccredited with ‘B’ grade with CGPA 2.78 in 4.0 point scale by NAAC in the year 2010.

It is a great pleasure to mention that the college has been selected as one of the two IT-institutes of Assam under NEC programme and accordingly, the college is offering two degree programmes viz. B.Sc. (Computer Science) and BCA affiliated to Assam University from the academic Session 2005-06. The College has also introduced B.Sc. Honours Programme in Biotechnology from the session 2006-07. The college welcomes the new generation of students who enter this institution with hearts vibrating with hopes and aspirations. Let every student of this institution develop intellectual and moral power in a healthy environment and strengthen himself/herself physically, mentally and spiritually.

The college was originally affiliated to the Calcutta University, then to the Gauhati University and in 1994, when the Assam University was established, it became affiliated to the latter. Today, it is one of the leading colleges under Assam University imparting education in all three faculties – Arts, Science and Commerce.
Financial Management of the college is the joint responsibility of the Govt. of Assam & the College Governing Body. The academic Management is usually undertaken by the College Teachers’ Council, of which Principal is the president. The University Exam and Unit Test/ Assessment Exam. Are usually conducted by a team of teachers nominated by the Teachers’ Council. Co-curricular and Extra-curricular activities are managed by a different Committees and Cells constituted by Teachers’ Council.

Compulsory Computer Literacy programme.
A host of eminent, scholarly and enthusiastic faculty under the able academic leadership of the Principal is under the charge of teaching-learning and other co-curricular and extra-curricular activities in the college. A good number of the faculty members are engaged in active research by operating projects, publishing in academic journals and working on doctoral programme. Presently, College has all together 78 regular teaching faculty in 17 departments of Science, Arts and Commerce and a Computer Centre that runs Computer Literacy Program.
The College has a rich library of more than 29 thousand books which is in the process of computerisation. Students are allowed to borrow two books at a time (in case of Honours students, more books may be allowed) and they are to return the books as per Library rules framed from time to time by the Library Committee.
The students will have to pay cost for damage of books and fine for delay in returning the books. Students will be able to take notes and read books/ Newspapers/Journals etc. in the Reading Room. The reading room will remain open between 10-30 a.m. and 5 p.m. on all working days. The students can submit requisition for books from 12 noon to3 pm.
Reprographic services are also available against payment of cost fixed by the librarian.
The College Library is equipped with SOUL software and ROT service facilities. Internet facility is also available in college library. The College also has a rich Book Bank which extends its services to the students as per Book Bank Rules.

Internal quality assurance cell (IQAC)
As a part of post-accereditated quality sustenance measures College has constituted an Internal Quality Assurance Cell (IQAC) as per the guideline of NAAC in the year 2004. The IQAC ensures continuous improvement in the entire operations of the institution and ensures the Institution’s accountability to the stakeholders. Dr. Radhikaranjan Chakraborty, Principal of the college is the Ex-Officio Chairman of IQAC. Dr. Pijush Kanti Talukdar, Associate Professor and HOD of Statistics is the present Coordinator of the cell.
Assam University Syllabus
The Union activities are divided into indoor and out-door sports, cultural activities, meeting and debates social service etc. Membership to the Union is compulsory. Principal is the Ex-officio President of the Union. Other office bearers and Class Representatives are elected annually from amongst the student who act under supervision of professors-in-charge of different sections. Students Union election is conducted as per the DHE’s guideline based on the direction of the Hon’ble Supreme Court.
Career Guidance and Placement Cell:
The Placement cum Information and Career Guidance Cell has been setup with the objectives (i) to guide students in selecting suitable courses of study by providing them with all relevant information. (ii) to create awareness about self-employment and entrepreneurship, and also career options among students (iii) to provide basic information about opportunities for self-employment and entrepreneurship (iv) to provide guidance to the students for their appropriate placement (V) to establish linkage with different recruiting agencies The ICGC conducted “The Jagadish Bose National Science Talent Search Examinations” on 2nd and 9th November, 2009 for JBNSTS Junior and Seminar Scholarships. The Cell organised a workshop on “Scope of Future Study and Placement” (reference to India as well as in Global context) for the undergraduate students (Science)on 22nd August, 2009. Resource Person for the workshop was Mr. Rajib Talukdar, Chartered Engineer, ICHEMIE, London . The Cell organised a workshop on “Scope of employment/self employment” for under graduate students (Arts, Science & Commerce) on 22nd August, 2009. Dr. C.R.Bhattacharjee, Teacher-in-Charge of placement cell, Assam University, Dr. G.Das, Teacher-in-Charge of Placement Cell, National Institute of Technology, Silchar and Dr. N.Roy, Director, IQAC, Assam University attended as resource persons in the workshop. In collaboration with NIIT, Karimganj center the Cell organised a workshop on “Career Orientation programme” for undergraduate students on 04th September, 2009.
UGC Network Resource Centre:
The College offers internet facilities through this centre to create awareness among the students about the use of Computer in various activities and to provide access to multimedia materials in learning process at places of eminence in India and abroad with a nominal user-charge.
Separate Boys’ & Girls’ Hostel:
Separate Boys’ and Girls’ Hostel facilities to the extent of about 30 seats for male and 20 seats for female students are available. The seats will be allotted on merit cum distance basis. Students are instructed to mention in the application form (for admission to college) if they need hostel accommodation.
Gymnasium & Yoga Centre:
The College has a well equipped Gymnasium and Yogo Centre managed by qualified instructors who impart Gymnastic and Yogo training to the students. Sri Biswajit Ghosh acts as the in-charge of the centre. To develop physical and mental health, College has made this training complusory for all students. A charge of Rs. 100/- per annum is collected from a student to meet the expenditure of the centre.
NSS & Extension Activities:
The College encourages the Students to participate in NSS. Students can involve themselves in nation building activities through NSS. The College also encourages the aspect of education which emphasised the neighbourhood interactions. The Extension Activites are integrated with the curricula, so as to expand the opportunities to help, serve, reflect and learn. Sri M. K. Dutta, Selection Grade Lecturer of the Dept. of Commerce is the officer- in- charge of NSS & the Exension Activities of the College.
College provides medical checkup facilities to the students, teachers and other employees of the College on every Wednesday. Dr. M. S. Dasgupta, M.B.B.S., attends the Health Centre from 2 p.m. to 3-30 p.m. on Tuesday and extends health services to the College Community.
The NCC unit of Karimganj College has celebrated its Golden Jubilee in 2002. The authorised enrolment strength of the company is 100. In addition to this, the College has raised a Central Government Funded (CGF) platoon with effect from the academic Session 2002-2003. Sri P.S.Das, Lecturer, Deptt. of Botany and Biotechnology is responsible for enrolment of students and for their training with the help of Army Staff of the Battalion Office located at College campus. The NCC cadets after successful completion of training can appear B & C certificate examinations. The selected cadets also enjoy the benifit of attending different NCC camps held across the country. All NCC Cadets are provided with uniform items free of cost.
IGNOU STUDY CENTRE:
A study centre of IGNOU has been activated in the College for number of programmes since the Session 2005-06. Dr. M. K. Bhattacharya, SG. Lecturer, Department of Botany & Biotechnology, has been appointed as the co-ordinator of the IGNOU study centre of the College. The diverse programme of IGNOU and the admission criteria can be obtained from the office of the co-ordinator of the study centre.
