Established in 1996 and administered by the Cachar Cancer Hospital Society, a non-profit NGO

Located in the outskirts of Silchar town in the Barak Valley of Assam in India

Sees over 3000 new and over 14000 follow-up patients annually

Cachar Cancer HospitalNearly 62% of the patients earn Rs. 3000 or less a month

Many of them are daily wage labourers, agricultural and tea garden workers.

Nearly 75% of the patients are treated for free or at subsidised rates

Serves patients from the Barak valley districts of Assam state and from the states of Tripura, Manipur and Mizoram.

Has departments of radiation, surgical and medical oncolgy, pain and pallaitive care, pathology, radiology and molecular oncology, a preventive oncology programme, a tumour registry and a pharmacy.

Has organized in support of patients:-

A help desk at the outpatient department (especially to help patients in need), an in-house pharmacy that sells medicines at discounted rates, a kitchen to take care of the food needs of patients and their attendants in need.

Has plans to organize:-

A guest house to accommodate patients and their attendants who cannot afford accommodation outside.

A self-support employment centre that would provide able patients and their attendants income while they are away from their homes during the treatment period.

Satellite centres to offer cancer care in the three districts of the Barak Valley of Assam so patients would be able to access cancer care facilities near their homes.

The hospital:
Is continuously facing challenges of trained human resources, finances and infrastructure.

Our Objectives:
To develop the Cachar Cancer Hospital into a comprehensive cancer centre and state of the art tertiary level referral offering treatment to all irrespective of the patient’s socioeconomic status;

To develop educational programs for medical and paramedical personnel in the various subspecialties of oncology;

To contribute to basic and clinical research and to get involved in multi-centre trials.

Accomplishment of these objectives, with the larger objective of full-fledged cancer care in the Northeastern region would need human resources, development of departments and equipment.
