Barak Valley residents stage sit-in at Maligaon CORRESPONDENT PANDU, Jan 20 A sit-in demonstration by the people of Barak Valley was held on January 19 in front of the office of the General Manager, NF Railway, at Maligaon demanding speedy completion of broadgauge conversion work of Silchar-Lumding hill section, development of rail connectivity of South Assam and the adjoining States including immediate restoration of regular train services between Lumding-Agartala and Silchar-Agartala and also restoration of Karimganj-Kolkata rail link through Bangladesh. The demonstration was organised by the Cachar-Hailakandi and Karimganj district committee of CPI (M).
In support of the demands a meeting was held at the demonstration site which was addressed among others by CPI (M) leader and MLA Ananta Deka, Nishith Das, ex-MLA of Karimganj, Dipak Bhattacharyya, ex-MLA of Hailakandi, CPI (M) leader Deben Bhattacharyya, Tiken Das, KC Roy Karmakar of NF Railway Mazdoor Union, Tapan Sarma of CITU and Satanjib Das of JCTU.
A delegation led by Ananta Deka, MLA, met the general manager (Con), NF Railway, and handed over a memorandum containing four demands. The general manager is reported to have assured the delegation of speedy steps. source: assam tribune
