When entertaining gets priority
- Singer tells wannabe performers that looking good is half
the trick
IDOL CHAT TELEGRAPH INDIA
Voice of India Debojit Saha on what
it takes to be an entertainer...
Though I am far from being a celebrity, having spent quite a
few years in tinsel town as an entertainer, I now know that
it takes quite an effort to be seen and heard. And this
effort does not have to do only with your talent. In fact,
it may sometimes seem frivolous but in showbiz, what shows
is what sells.
As a singer, I have learnt the hard way that stage presence
is one of the foremost requirements.
That is what I was told when I first started my journey with
Zee TV’s SaReGaMaPa contest.
Without stage presence, an entertainer is worth nothing.
I make it a point to study the mannerisms of famous
entertainers — both past and present — and try to learn the
tricks of the trade.
However, I must clarify here that I am not into plagiarising.
If you are an upcoming entertainer — singer or actor — I
would like to advise you that being a copy-cat will take you
nowhere. Only the “original” ones stand the test of time.
The world of showbiz can be very harsh. And only those who
stand out succeed.
And that brings us to the moot point — dressing up. Always
being under the spotlight is not an easy job. Which is why
you have to be carefully dressed — in your own style.
I do take special care about my clothes. And I am lucky that
I don’t have to look for designers for my wardrobe. My wife
Vandana is a very good fashion designer, having graduated
from the National Institute of Fashion Technology in
Calcutta. She takes care of my clothes.
But it is not just enough to wear good clothes. One must
know how to carry it off. Most of the stars I have come
across carry themselves very well. One of the singers I
admire most is Shaan, who can look gorgeous even in a simple
outfit. I have seen Shaan perform in a just a pair of jeans
and a T-shirt. I am quite comfortable in T-shirt and jeans
myself, but I have to wear gaudy clothes on certain
occasions when I am performing.
I have a fetish for shoes, watches and sunglasses. I have
quite a large collection of these in my closet.
Apart from dressing, an entertainer needs to develop his own
style of talking and walking. And can there be any better
example than our evergreen hero Dev Anand? For me, he is the
ultimate entertainer.
