municipality to get Rs 15 lakh for museum construction

KARIMGANJ, March 4 – Silchar Municipality will get a sum of
Rs 15 lakh soon for construction of a museum at a suitable
place in the town for preservation of Archaeological and
Anthropological antique items and other important historical
remains in it. This was announced by the Assam Urban
Development and Housing Minister DP Goala recently is a
meeting held at Silchar. The meeting was organised by
Silchar Municipality to celebrate the completion of 125th
anniversary of its foundation.
Speaking on the occasion, Goala said ‘Under the present
Congress regime, both at the Centre and the State,
municipalities and town committees in Assam basic
infrastructure and urban amenities. Silchar being the second
largest municipality in the State, has got funds from
Central and State government in various categories. This
town deserves to be converted into a Municipal Corporation
if the expanding perimetre, traffic congestion and
population explosion of this historic town are taken into
account’.
Referring to the proposal of the municipality, the Urban
Development Minister said under
Jawaharlal Nehru Urban Renewal Mission and 12th
Finance Commission, Silchar is likely to get huge fund from
the Centre in near future.
He gladly welcomed the proposal to construct housing complex
for the slum dwellers and said this year 13 urban bodies of
the State have been enlisted for sanction of fund under
integrated housing project. Union Heavy Industries Minister
Santosh Mohan Deb has lauded the efforts of public sector
enterprises for their involvement towards the development of
the people with financial back ups.
He made this comment on the occasion of the installation of
a CT scan machine at the Cachar Cancer Hospital recently,
the fund for which was provided by the ONGC.
He said that since the CT scan machine is an important part
of any cancer hospital for the investigation and treatment
of the dreaded disease, its installation was a significant
event in the brief but eventful annals of the hospital. “In
the event of occurrence of cancer in a middle class family,
it becomes cancerous for the entire family’, Deb pointed
out– “Besides financial problem, the family has to go
through untold mental agony’. He was hopeful that the flow
of patients from the Valley to
Chennai or
Mumbai would cease as the concern hospital in Silchar
is better equipped with the latest technology which would
help in the treatment.
Deb said, he will initiate the public enterprises to
contribute towards the socio-economic development of Barak
Valley by creating necessary infrastructure. He said, ONGC,
IOC, Power Grid and BHEL were the major donators.
He specified that a high class cricket stadium is on the
verge of completion with the help of the Public Enterprise
department. Rs. 5 crore has been extended by BHEL for
electrification of the stadium. BHEL, he said, donated Rs 2
crore to make the stadium and for the renovation of blocks.
The concrete passage is the biggest market complex of this
town better known as Fatak bazar has been built with help
from BHEL. The mechanised garbage cleaners are also gifts
from the public sector companies. He said, “I have to bear
bitter criticism for the bad conditions of roads. I am
exploring newer avenues of finance from corporate houses and
in a short time, the citizens will have better roads.”
“The Ministry of Heavy Industries and Public Enterprises
will take steps to work for the well being of the SC/ST and
minority communities’, Deb revealed with the help of OIL,
the Moinul Haque Chaudhury Stadium named after the great
political leader and a Union Minister from this valley could
be made ready to promote rural sports and games, he added.
He also added that the Cachar Paper Mill has come forward to
help Badarpur College in its upgradation. A hostel for
minority students has been planned at
Karimganj with fund from OIL.
Karimganj ZP: It has now become almost clear that the
Congress is going to form the Karimganj Zilla Parishad by
inducting some of the winning independent candidates into
the party’s fold. In the election, Congress won 8 seats,
Assam United Democratic Front bagged 4 seats while BJP
bagged one.
According to the sources, in the district, two winning
candidates of the Congress are very much in the presidential
race for Karimganj ZP. They are Akhil Kr Talukdar from
Bhairabnagar ZPC, who contested the last Assembly election
from Ratabari LAC but had lost.
The other aspirant is Mantaj Ali, who won from the Amipur
ZPC and has been in panchayat politics for more than three
decades.
It may be mentioned here that Shibani Biswas, former
Karimganj ZP chairperson could not get Congress nomination
this time. The former vice-president of Karimganj ZP Abdul
Aziz also did not get a Congress ticket this time due to
unknown reasons. But he contested the election as an
independent candidate from Sarisha Bazarghat ZPC and won.
