SIVASAGAR, Nov 29: The National Association of Software and Service Companies (NASSCOM), which is known as the ‘Chamber of Commerce for IT Software and Service Industries’ in the country has opened a new scheme for 20,000 graduates and graduate-level students studying in the current academic session from the eight North-eastern States for appointment in IT-BPO industries of the country and multinational companies (MNCs). Of these 20,000 students, 8,000 are from Asom.
In the maiden approach of the project launched this year in the region, the prospective candidates had been confined to last year’s graduates and to those who are studying in the current academic session in the second and final year of graduation. NASSCOM has executed this project with the cooperation of the Union Ministry for Development of the North Eastern Region (DoNER) and for this purpose, a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed recently between the DoNER ministry and NASSCOM at New Delhi.
The pilot project has been launched by NASSCOM with the object of enhancing employability in this region through a NASSCOM Assessment of Competence (NAC) test conducted in this region.
According to NASSCOM chairman Kiron Karnic, this MoU initiating NASSCOM’s partnership with the North-east has been a significant milestone for the company. This would enable NASSCOM to further identify the talents from this region and to provide them with job opportunities in the growing BPO industry, Karnic said, adding that it would showcase the human resource potential of the North-east.
Expressing satisfaction at the presence of Union DoNER Minister Mani Shankar Aiyar at the MoU signing ceremony, Karnic said that the minister’s presence has signified the full support of the ministry and the Government to take forward the objectives of the MoU.
NASSCOM conducted the NAC test to select 20,000 students including 8,000 from Asom recently. The eligibility of the targeted students has been standardized at securing 50 per cent marks in aggregate in the last degree examination, second and third year final examinations.
A NASSCOM source told The Sentinel that the NASSCOM project has been launched in other parts of the country since 2006 to ensure transformation of a ‘trainable work-force’ into an ‘employable work-force’ for ‘creating a continuous pipeline of talent for BPO industry’. This project is expected to open up employment opportunities in large numbers in IT and BPO companies and MNCs.
The NAC test which is an on-line test comprises of five parts – essay-writing, answering multiple choice questions, analytical and quantitative reasoning, speaking and listening. After the test, each candidate will be given score-cards which can be treated as a gate pass for recruitment in the IT-BPO industry and MNCs with a validity period of one year.
Meanwhile, Asom Government has shown keen interest in the project. Secretary Higher Education Alok Kumar, through a letter No. 257/07/21 has requested all Deputy Commissioners of the State to convene a meeting of principals of colleges in their respective districts and to direct the principals to select at least 100 students from each college to appear in the NASSCOM-NAC test.
Dr Prakash Kotoky, principal, Sibsagar College, one of the best among 50 colleges in the country selected by the UGC as a college of potential excellence, regretted that the response of students to this unique opportunity has been very poor. He said that the college even conducted a counselling programme for the benefit of the students. Even then, only 14 students came out to take the NASSCOM-NAC test. According to Dr Kotoky, lack of awareness of such an ambitious project may be a factor for the lukewarm response from the students.
