Silchar, July 3: Natural gas has been found in south
Assam for the second time in a span of two months.
Premier Oil Company, an Anglo-Dutch multinational oil
major, has struck gas at its Pechadahar drill site near
this town as part of its long-term hydrocarbon search
operations.
The first gas discovery was made in early May, when Oil
and Natural Gas Corporation Limited (ONGC) traced a gas
flow in its 2,705-metre-deep drilling well at Khubal in
Karimganj district.
A senior Premier Oil official today announced that the
natural gas was struck at Pechadhar on Sunday, when the
rig encountered heavy gas pressure that impeded its
downward slide at a site in the well. The rig had gone
up to a depth of 3,998 metres.
The oil major had decided to drill up to a depth of
4,240 metres, and senior engineers of the company are
confident of reaching this depth without facing any more
hassles in the next couple of days.
The official added that further tests would be necessary
in this well for reaching a firm conclusion about the
quantum of gas trapped under the soil surface there.
Premier Oil’s hydrocarbon experts are, however,
extremely optimistic about their prognosis that an
abundant reserve of natural gas would be available in
the first well that the oil major has struck there.
Premier Oil had spudded this well on January 21.
In its next phase of exploration, Premier Oil will
embark on drilling of two more wells in Hailakandi
district.
ONGC has already found gas reserves in its wells at
Adamtilla in Karimganj district and at Banskandi and
Bhubandhar fields in Cachar district.
At present, ONGC has been extracting natural gas at the
average rate of 110,000 square metres a day (scmd) even
as the demand for it in the districts is pegged at
167,000 scmd.
The gas is primarily consumed by two power plants at
Adamtilla and Banskandi, set up by DLF Power, which have
a daily production capacity of 24 MW. Tea gardens in
South Assam also use this gas.
The Cachar forward base of ONGC belongs to the Miocene
geological age.
