Silchar, Nov. 26: Exploration companies, both
domestic and overseas, are facing difficulties in
extracting crude oil and natural gas from Cachar’s
vast reservoir of hydrocarbon in south Assam
districts.
Adding to the instance of yet another failure in the
exploratory drilling in Cachar district, Premier Oil,
an Anglo-Dutch multinational oil major, said it is
winding up operations to strike gas in Pechadahar
village, 6km west of this town, after reaching a depth
of 4,050 metres three months ago.
Country manager of Premier Oil Mike Johnson said the
rig, having successively drilled up to the penultimate
underground point in Pechadahar, also technically
known as Masimpur III, could produce at least 180
billion cubic metre of natural gas with a prospect of
changing the economic profile of this backward region.
Senior officials of the company chose to keep mum on
the reasons of their failure in striking gas but
insiders said the “abnormal underground pressure and
the possibility of rock slides in the sub-surface” in
Cachar’s geological area had posed problems in
exploration.
A few years ago, the much-touted exploration bid by
the Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC) at nearby
Masimpur was also abandoned after the drillers
encountered subterranean pressure.
According to sources, Premier Oil has now decided to
go slow in their proposed drilling in Algapur and
Kanchanpur sites under Hailakandi district.
