Expansion of
cargo services in Barak Valley stressed
From Our

KARIMGANJ, Nov 3 — In view of the poor road and rail
communication between Barak Valley and the rest of the
country Mission Ranjan Das, MLA, North Karimganj has urged
the Union Minister for Water Transport and Shipping to take
steps to explore the possibilities and expansion of cargo
service in Barak Valley.
He further said that if cargo services between
Kolkata and Karimganj via
Bangladesh could be made available throughout the
year besides extension of services to other areas of the
valley adjoining the Barak river and other rivers,
transportation cost would be cheaper.
In a letter addressed to the Union Minister, Das said that
there was ample scope for large scale commercial cargo
services in the Barak valley. If the water route upto
Karimganj is used in a big way, the people of Barak Valley
and adjoining areas of Tripura, Manipur and Mizoram will get
goods at a cheaper price and people will have an alternative
cheaper route too,” he mentioned in the letter.
It may be mentioned here that though there exists a steamer
jetty at Karimganj on the bank of Kushiara river, cargo
services in terms of number and volume are on the decline
threatening the very existence of the Inland Water Transport
Corporation at Karimganj.
According to Nirmalya Das, a social activist of Karimganj,
the situation would not have been so horrible during the
recent floods in the valley at Karimganj had not been
delinked with Silchar by both railway and road for about two
weeks or if riverways could be properly utilised for
transportation. While identifying heavy silting as the main
reason for the rise of bed level of the rivers in the Barak
Valley, leading to prolonged floods, concerned circles were
of the view that regular steamer services through Kushiara
river and Barak could have reduced the silting problem to
some extent.
