this
Diwali.... Telegraph India
In that one hour as I travelled on the dusty, broken
village road to Palonghat, a sleepy rural hamlet 22 km
from Silchar town, memories of my schooldays and friends
kept coming back like a flashback in a movie.
It was the deep, dark night of Kali Puja when I reached
Palonghat, with a mixed feeling of joy and nostalgia. Joy,
because I would meet so many of my childhood friends who
were waiting to receive me and my wife Vandana all
afternoon (I learnt that later). And nostalgia because I
would return to the place where I grew up, went to school
and spent most of my childhood.
Needless to add, Palonghat holds a very special place in
my heart. That broken country road had indeed brought me
home.
Our ancestral house is a two-storey wood-and-concrete
structure with the unmistakable stamp of a British-era
building. It has a big compound, a big pond and a garden
full of trees and flowers. Though our family shifted to
Silchar many years ago, my uncles still live in the house.
It was a very emotional reunion with my childhood friends.
The last time I had been at Palonghat was in 2005, just
after winning my title.
Despite being very tired because I was constantly
travelling — I was at Kailasahar in Tripura the day before
and in
Calcutta before that — I could not turn down my
friends and relatives' requests to sing for them. And the
mehfil, which was supposed to be a very short one,
stretched long into the night as one request after another
came in from the audience. I did not want to disappoint
anybody and tried my best to oblige.
It was indeed a very special occasion for both of us — and
I am sure, to all my friends too — as we recalled those
carefree childhood days.
I still remember, when we were young, my friends and I
would make a dash for the little river — which flows
nearby — after school for an afternoon swim. I would have
loved to see the river again but could not do so because
it was night. But I asked after it all the same.
As I had to return to Silchar the very next morning, I
could not take in the sight and sounds of Palonghat to the
extent I would have liked to, but the trip was still
memorable.
Kali Puja is still celebrated with traditional pomp and
gaiety at our Palonghat house and that night too I joined
the festivities.
I also have some good news for my fans, as far as my
singing is concerned. Just before coming to Assam, I
recorded a song for a Hindi film with Bappi Lahiri.
I want to take this opportunity, though belated, to extend
my heartiest Diwali greetings to all.
