Completion of BG
link in Barak Valley urged

SILCHAR, July 14 – All Cachar-Karimganj- Hailakandi
Students Union (ACKHSA) has demanded immediate completion of
the Broad Gauge link for the people of Barak Valley. In this
connection, the students gathered in front of Deputy
Commissioner’ s office and submitted a memorandum to the
Prime Minister through his office.
Sources said the BG project was initiated way back in 1983.
After its cancellation, the NF Railways came forward with
proposition on the same. In 1997, the then Railway minister
laid the foundation stone of Silchar-Lumding BG link. Even
the present Railway minister Lalu Prasad declared it a
national project.
But the fate of this railway track is still doubtful as work
on not even a single tunnel has been taken up. The two most
important bridges on Barak and Jatinga rivers are yet to be
constructed.
No doubt insurgency is creating a problem but looking at the
significant progress of 292 km-long Jammu-Srinagar Baramulla
BG track which is all set to be completed by 2007, the
negligence of the authorities is being reflected in this
remote corner of
Assam.
