Assam Varsity to get
hi-tech observatory
- First of its kind in N-E |
| OUR CORRESPONDENT TELEGRAPH INDIA |

Silchar, Feb. 4: Assam University, Silchar, in
conjunction with the Mumbai-based Indian Institute of
Geomagnetism (IIG) under the department of science and
technology, will gift the Northeast a hi-tech
observatory, the first of its kind in the quake-prone
region, to monitor constant fluctuations of the
Earth’s crust.
The Rs 5-crore project will be set up under the aegis
of the physics department of the 13-year-old central
institution of higher education and research at
Dargakona.
The observatory would be mainly used to assess
magnetic pulls in the Earth’s bowels to gauge
atmospheric changes that cause high-velocity cyclones,
floods and drought, said the university’s physics
teacher Asoke Kumar Sen.
Sen claimed that the observatory would help forecast
earthquakes in the highly-seismic Zone V of the
region. With the help of modern astronomical gadgets,
parts of which will be imported and assembled on the
university campus, earthquakes could be forecast 15
days ahead of tremors.
The university authorities had allocated three acres
of land, including a building where the scientists
would be able to conduct uninterrupted research on
geomagnetic changes of the Earth’s underground and its
possible impact on Earth, Sen said.
According to him, the observatory will help the civil
aviation department, including the air force. The
inspiration behind the state-of-the-art observatory is
J.V. Narlikar, the internationally-renowned space
scientist. The vice-chancellor of Assam University,
Tapodhir Bhattacharjee, has signed a memorandum of
understanding with the Pune-based Inter-University
Centre for Astronomy and Astrophysics (IUCAA), for
setting up of a data centre, the first ever in the
country, on its campus.
It will provide feedback on the vast outer space and
facilitate countrywide research on space science,
university sources said. The director of the central
research institution in positional astronomy, Naresh
Dadhichi, was in regular touch with the university’s
scientists.
The head of the university’s physics department,
Ramendra Bhattacharjee, said the data centre would be
a shot in the arm for space scientists.
