A network that refuses
to connect

Nov. 30: The BSNL dial-up network in
Hailakandi does just that — dials up interminably.
Subscribers bear the monotonous drone of dial-up for
as long as they can suppress their desire to boot —
not the technical “boot” mind you — the computer.
If the Internet does get connected once in a blue
moon, the sites takes aeons to open.
Demands for introduction of a Broadband service have
fallen on deaf ears.
The CellOne service, too, remains in “no network” mode
for most part of the year.
“The people of Hailakandi are at the end of their
tether because of frequent absence of the network.
Most mobile phone subscribers are now planning to give
up their phones for good,” a customer said.
Residents of Jamira and Gharmurrah say that if you
want an error-free CellOne network, you have to climb
a hill. What peeves the residents is the plethora of
BSNL advertisements that promise unhindered
connectivity in the remotest corners of the country.
As if poor mobile services were not enough, the
landlines, too, remain out of service for most part of
the year, cable-fault being the most common excuse.
Numerous complaints on the General Packet Radio
Service (GPRS), too, have failed to effect the BSNL
authorities.
