National Institute of Technology Silchar Cachar 788010 Assam (State)

Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru sought to develop India as a world leader in Science and Technology. To achieve this, several IITs and NITs (Erstwhile RECs) were established in different parts of the country. Regional Engineering College at Silchar was founded in 1967 as a co-operative venture between the Government of India and the Government of Assam to cater to the country’s need for manpower in technology. RECs were jointly operated by the central government and the concerned state government. Non-recurring expenditures and expenditures for post-graduate courses during the REC period were borne by the central government, while recurring expenditure on undergraduate courses was shared equally by central and state governments. The college was conferred with autonomy in financial and administrative matters to achieve rapid development. In 2002, the institution was granted Deemed University status with the approval of the UGC/AICTE and was renamed National Institute of Technology, Silchar. . In 2007, through NIT Bill, the Indian government declared these schools as Institute of National Importance at par with the Indian Institutes of Technology.
