My stay in Kolkata saw many Sylheti families not responding back in Sylheti when asked something in that dialect.  I feel pity that after being attached for so many years with that region how one can neglect that region and vernacular.  I feel strange that Sylheti is being ignored in Silchar even, but there are people who do love Sylheti wherever they are and for that reason srihatta sammilani can be found every place on the earth where there are Sylheti people. Neglecting one’s language is just like neglecting his/her parents.  So whenever I meet a Sylheti person, wherever he/she is, I speak Sylheti with him/her, but it is his/her choice which language he/she responds to.

Amazingly enough I found Kolkatans who have no knowledge about Sylheti are fond of our parlance and they have shown great desire to learn the language.

The answer to not speaking in Sylheti lies in our homes where parents are stringent about allowing their children to speak Sylheti and designate it as “kacha bhasha”.  I have seen my cousins in Silchar whose parents use to speak kelu in front of them and use to tell others to speak in kelu so that their language does not get spoiled.

I feel proud when i speak in Syleti with fellow people, through its a part of Bengali language, yet it has a unique identity. Sylheti boys also now a days prefer to speak in kelu (which is known as actual/pure Bengali language).

Sylheti language is a different langauge, it should get official status. There is greater differences of Sylheti to Bengali, than Assamese to Bengali, which is recognised as separate.

I totally agree with the point that there is a greater language barrier between Sylheti to Bengali than Assamese to Bengali.  The reason for this lies in our ancient history.  Sylhet was part of the ancient kingdom of Kamarupa and has many common features with Assamese, including the existence of a larger set of fricatives than other East Indo-Aryan languages.

As Sylheti is multinational language both sides of the border has larger role to play.  It is widely spoken in Sylhet, Habiganj, Maulavi Bazar, and Sunamganj in Bangladesh whereas in India Cachar, Karimganj and Hailakandi all the three districts of Barak Valley region of Assam in India.  There are over 10,000,000 speakers of the language throughout the globe, including 8,000,000 speakers in Bangladesh alone.  After Bangladesh largest number of Sylheti speaking peoples are in India, but that does not mean that Sylheti will get official status easily.  Sylheti is often considered as a dialect of Bengali rather than language.

I stay in Mumbai and I always speak in Sylheti with the people of barak, I feel proud that I was borned in barak valley and I visit the place at-least once in a year. We should not forget our identity. In other cities we do not have our identity. We are barak-bashi only and sylhety is our language.
