 Indian Law is largely derived from English common law. Much of contemporary Indian law shows substantial European and American influence. For example, various acts and ordinances first introduced by the British are still in effect today, though many have been removed in their entirety or phased out.

While Indian laws are well-intentioned, there is a general perception among the population that one can get away with any crime due to various flaws in the execution. But still the system is efficient and the long hands of Indian law engulfs criminals anyway. Common grievances regarding law implementation include corruption (bribes are given to officials, police and even the judiciary), inadequate protection to witnesses (witnesses are threatened or bribed into silence), inept prosecution, etc. Perhaps the greatest flaw is that criminals and offenders who have connections, or who are part of the system, so to speak, are let off, as was seen in the Jessica Lal case, given below.
