List of Higher Education in India 

India has one the largest Higher Education System in the World.

Following are the government councils responsible for recognition of courses, promotion of professional institutions and providing grants to undergraduate programmes and various awards.

University Grants Commission (UGC) is responsible for coordination, determination and maintenance of standards, release of grants.

The statutory professional councils are:

Bar Council of India (BCI),
National Council for Teacher Education (NCTE)
Rehabilitation Council of India (RCI)
Medical Council of India (MCI),

Dentist Council of India (DCI)
Central Council of Homeopathy (CCH)
Central Council of Indian Medicine (CCIM)

Academic Framework - Degree Structure

In India there are three principle levels of qualifications within the higher education system :

Bachelor / Undergraduate level
Master's / Post-graduate level
Doctoral / Pre-doctoral level

Diploma courses are available at the undergraduate and postgraduate level.

Bachelor's degree in arts, commerce and sciences is three years of education.

Master's degree is normally of two-year duration.

A pre-doctoral programme - Master of Philosophy (M.Phil.) is taken after completion of the Master's Degree.

National Eligibility Test (NET) is being conducted by the UGC for eligibility for lectureship. Around 50000 students appear for the test every year. Pass percentage is around 5%.

UNIVERSITY GRANTS COMMISSION (UGC)

Established by an act of Parliament in 1956. It discharges maintenance of standards of teaching, examination and research in the field of University and Higher Education and disburses grants to the universities and colleges; advises Central and State Governments on the measures necessary for the improvement of university education.
