Dental Education in India
Dentistry
is a branch of medical science, dealing with the
treatment of disorders of the mouth, face and
maxilla. There are two hundred and fifty Dental
Colleges in India, which produce up to twenty
thousand dentists every year. BDS, which is
expanded as Bachelor of Dental Surgery, is the
authorized under graduate degree for students.
However, many students do not get attracted to
BDS course because, the cost of pursuing dental
education and arranging a new clinic after the
studies is very high.
Like, for any
other course an Entrance Exam is a mandatory
process to join
the BDS course.
The various entrance exams conducted in the
nation are CBSE, PMT, DUMET, TNPCEE, BCECE
etc….The total span of this course is five
years, in which the first four years is for
Studies and training and the final year
comprises of a compulsory internship. The basics
of general medicine, physiology, biochemistry,
pathology, microbiology, pharmacology, surgery
and anatomy are taught here. In depth
Dental anatomy
with Oral histology, Oral Pathology, Pedodontics,
Prosthodontics, Periodontics, Endodontics, Oral
with Maxillofacial surgery, Oral Medicine with
Radiology and Orthodontics with Dentofacial are
taught as a part of their syllabus. MDS,
the Masters of dental surgery is the post
graduation course offered in India. The other
dental courses in dentistry are DDS, which is
Doctor of Dental Studies, DDM, which is the
Doctor of Dental Medicine, and MSD, which stands
for Master of Science in Dentistry. The number
of PG seats and colleges are very less, when
relatively compared to the number of UG seats
and institutions. Therefore, the government of
India has planned to; bring in new advanced
dental colleges thereby increasing the number of
seats, for the UG students to pursue PG not only
with the old regular subjects but also with
various new fields of dental studies.
Awareness should be created, which should
demonstrate the need of dentistry and dental
education in India. Our Indian government must
appoint many dentists in government and private
hospitals, and many dental hospitals and clinics
should be bloomed in all parts of India. Thus
making this service oriented study an attractive
and a well-known one for the future generation
to opt for it. |
