Elphinstone College, Mumbai Courses Admission 2014-2015
Elphinstone College is an institute providing post as well as under graduate education and is affiliated to the University of Mumbai. Being established in 1856, the college is one of the oldest colleges in Mumbai. It is situated at the heart of Mumbai, i.e. opposite Jahangir Art Gallery in Fort area. The college had a prestigious place under the British Raj and also known for vibrant alumni. The college is famous for creating some luminaries like Lokmanya Tilak, Pherozshah Mehta and Jamshedji Tata. At its beginning, the college had also played significant role in spreading western education in Bombay Presidency.
In December 2006, college celebrated its 150th year being formed in 1856. The college now offers various courses at under graduate level in all three faculties, viz. Science, Arts and Commerce. The college is also famous for its building which is built in ‘Romanesque Style’; the building has also been categorized as Grade I heritage structure. At the beginning, classes were conducted with only two professors teaching philosophy and general literature. In 1840, these two small classes were combined with society’s High School to establish Elphinstone Native Education Institution. Almost after 100 years, the name was reduced to Elphinstone College. In 1856, the Eplhinstone College was separated from the school thus making it a distinct institution. Therefore this year is officially considered as year of its inception.
The college played its part in the establishment of the Mumbai University as the entire inception classes of University were held at the Elphinstone College and after some time, moved to present campus. In the year of 1948, it was proposed that Elphinstone College will play host to the students of Jaihind College for their inception classes and thus accordingly admissions were carried out for Arts faculty. Same goes for J. J. School of Arts as all the initial drawing classes were used to take place in Elphinstone College.
The college is very old very famous college and has already seen many colleges emerging alongside it on the path of time.
