Anna University was formed by integrating two well known technical institutions in the city of Madras. They were the College of Engineering Guindy and Madras Institute of Technology. Anna University came in to existence on 4th September 1978.this University is situated in the city of Chennai and has three campuses. In December 2001 the status of this university changed in to Affiliated University. This university has 426 self financing engineering colleges under it. Six Government Colleges and three government aided Engineering colleges in various parts of Tamilnadu also comes under its fold. The Anna University is also an affiliated member of the Association of Indian Universities and there are five affiliated type of Universities in its fold now namely the Anna University of Technology in Coimbatore, Trichy, Madurai, Chennai and Tirunelveli.
A pass mark in the Higher Secondary course certificate examination conducted by the Tamilnadu State government or any other recognized 10+2 examinations by the Higher Secondary board o Tamilnadu will be bear minimum requirement for a candidate to seek admission to the Bachelor of Engineering course offered by the prestigious Anna University. The candidate must have also scored a minimum of 55% marks in the Physics, Chemistry and mathematics subjects in the qualifying examination. A mere pass mark in the above subjects is necessary for an SC/ST student to be eligible to apply for the BE course.
Any candidate who is seeking admission to the 1st year Bachelor of Engineering course in Tamilnadu should take up the common Tamilnadu Engineering Admission entrance test (TNEA)conducted by the Anna University, Chennai. The candidates will be selected based on the rank list that he or she achieves in the TNEA test. The marks obtained will form the basis of admission to the engineering courses in various departments of Ann University, Government and Government aided colleges of engineering and some seats in the self financing engineering colleges.
