2017 Durga Puja in Shillong
Durga puja is celebrated with prominence in Shillong. This
auspicious occasion is also known as durgostsab . The Durga puja
festival in Shillong last for nine days. During these nine days,
the most powerful goddess of Hindus, Durga will be worshiped in
different forms. Goddess Durga is considered as the goddess of
valor, goddess Lakshmi for wealth and goddess Saraswati bless
people with wisdom. It is believed that praying to these
goddesses during Durga puja bestows a person with power, wealth
and wisdom and he will attain victory in life.
Durga puja in Shillong is done in the traditional Bengali way.
The rituals start with Mahalaya and ends with the immersion of
the idol on the tenth day or the vijaya dasami . There are many
other rituals performed on each day starting from maha shashti.
The important days of the puja are the maha sapthami, maha
ashtami and maha navami. It is believed that goddess Durga is
coming to visit her father on the earth during these days. The
idol of Durga will be placed on a big platform and life will be
imparted to the idol by performing a ritual called bodhon. The
main pujas are done after this ritual. It is believed that
praying to Durga on these three days is more auspicious. Aartis
and flower offerings are done to the idol once bodhon performed.
Bhog or Prasad is supplied to the devotees visiting the idol.
People wear new clothes and exchange sweets with the friends and
neighbors. Festivity prevails in the atmosphere and people
belonging to all religion will take part in the celebrations. On
the tenth day the idol is taken out for immersion in the nearby
river as a procession. People believe that Durga is returning to
her husband Shiva on this day.
