2017 Durga Puja in Bangalore

Durga Puja is a promising and most renowned festival for Bengali people. In Southern India, particularly Bangalore is providing cover to numerous Bengalis ever since more than a few decades. Durga Puja is a unique occurrence for Bengali Association of Bangalore which observes celebrations for Durga Puja.

Though the staying of Maa Durga on earth begins from Navaratri’s first day for other people, the Bengali community rejoices the coming of Maha Panchami evening which is 5th day after new moon, when Goddess Durga’s idol, along with Goddesses Saraswati, Lakshmi, Ganesha and Kartikeya are carried at Puja Pandal.

Although there are 4 famous Bengali organizations in Bangalore organizing Durga Puja, the oldest one is Bengali Association situated at Assaye Road. Maha Ashtami is a main event where puja begins in morning and ends at community Bhog on 12 noon. Cultural programs held in evening. The immersion occurs on Maha Dashami. Cultural programs take place everyday.

In Bangaluru, Bengali associations re-establish the togetherness and warmness of Durga Puja. But Bengalis have diverse views regarding celebrations in City. Though, the celebration is restricted to Bengalis and a few other small groups and there is no definite togetherness as most of meetings are spotted around city.

In proportion to Bengali calendar, days for Durga Puja are calculated on basis of sunset and sunrise while tithi relies on setting and rising of moon. The Sasthi, Saptami, Navami and Dashami Pujas respectively, are executed after sunrise even though they fall on earlier evenings.

Goddess Durga is adored as ‘Kumari’ or ‘young girl’ who later exposes herself in correct form on Maha Saptami (7th day). On Maha Ashtami (8th day) and Maha Navami (9th day), celebrations get to an exciting pitch. On Dashami (10th day), idol of Goddess Durga is engrossed in water. She is frequently attended by what Bengalis embrace as their family - Kartikeya and Ganesha, her sons, and Goddesses Saraswati and Lakshmi, who are believed to be Durga’s daughters.
